Richard Corben (November 1, 1940 – December 2, 2020) was an American illustrator and comic book artist best known for his comics featured in Heavy Metal magazine, especially the Den series which was featured in the magazine's first film adaptation in 1981. He was the winner of the 2009 Spectrum Grand Master Award and the 2018 Grand Prix at Angoulême. In 2012 he was elected to the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame.

Richard Corben was born in Missouri and grew up in Sunflower, Kansas, a community that worked for the Sunflower Ordnance Works, an army plant that manufactured bombs in World War II.

Encouraged by his parents to pursue art as a career, he moved to Kansas City to study filmmaking and animation at Kansas City Art Institute, where he graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

Dec 10, 2020 · During this period, Corben also drew one of the earliest graphic novels actually pitched as a "graphic novel," the 1975 Robert E. Howad sword and sorcery adaptation, Bloodstar. Corben brought his earlier concept, Den with him to Heavy Metal.Den was about a scrawny young man who is transported to Neverwhere, a world that is sort of a mixture of all of the iconic fictional universes (think Robert E. Howard's Hyborian Age combined with horror universes, as well).
