It's 1957 in Berlin when Monika, who is in the final stages of pregnancy, reaches the apartment of the Schöllacks. She has nowhere to live and wants to take refuge in her former home, but her mother Caterina turns her away. Unmarried and single, Monika is harshly judged in hospital as well.
