Aug 9, 2022 · Anders Sparrman, a Swedish naturalist, died Aug. 9, 1820, at the age of 72. He studied with the great Carl von Linné (Linnaeus) at Uppsala University, went on a voyage to China after graduating, and then, in 1772, he headed for the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa to study the local flora and fauna.
In this splendid novel by the Swedish writer Per Wästberg, Anders Sparrman is a young barber-surgeon who joins a voyage from Stockholm to Cadiz, where they take on board “jars of olive oil, wine vinegar, lemon juice against scurvy, brandy mixed with up to a third of water, six oxen, six calves, ten sheep, eight pigs and several hundred hens”.
