Robert Eugene Marshak (October 11, 1916 – December 23, 1992) was an American physicist, educator, and eighth president of the City College of New York . Biography. Marshak was born in the Bronx, New York City. His parents, Harry and Rose Marshak, were immigrants from Minsk.

Beginning in 1950, Marshak was chair of the Department of Physics for fourteen years, during which time the Department rose to recognition as a prominent research center in high-energy physics. Committed to international science and global peace, Robert Marshak died on December 23, 1992.
