Downside School (simply referred to as Downside) is an 11–18 mixed, Roman Catholic, independent, day and boarding school in Stratton-on-the-Fosse, Somerset, England. It was established in 1614 and is located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Clifton. Originally a school for English Catholic boys, it was established by English and Welsh monks living in exile at Douai, France.

Downside offers a number of scholarships for gifted and talented pupils hoping to join the School at the principal ages of entry of 11+, 13+ and 16+. For families who may struggle to meet the full fee payment there is the option to apply for a means-tested bursary and you can apply for this regardless of whether your child is eligible for a scholarship.

The Downside Ball Game is an outdoor racquet sport which bears some similarities to Fives, however it is played with a solid wooden bat rather than one’s hand. The Wall is a massive structure, some 12m high by 30m wide, comprising two playing walls, each with angled wings, and an open-fronted shelter forming a sort of distance-piece between them.

The new performing-arts centre is a big hit, with its 500-seat theatre, recording studio, music school and Mac-packed editing suite.
May 20, 2024 · Downside School has been graded ‘Outstanding’ in all nine categories by the Catholic Schools Inspectorate, following the visit of inspectors from 25th-26th April 2024 which examined the school’s Catholic life and mission, religious education, and collective worship.
