The current school site was built in 1963 as a secondary modern school, later becoming the main comprehensive school for North Oxford, with a catchment area extending down to the city centre, Grandpont, and New Hinksey.
The Cherwell School is an academy which is part of The River Learning Trust, as such it is its own admissions authority. The River Learning Trust has delegated the responsibility for admission arrangements to the Local Authority for Year Groups 7 to 11.
