Sophia, electress of Hanover (1630–1714). Sophia was a granddaughter of James I by his daughter Elizabeth, who had married the elector palatine. On the death in 1700 of Anne's last surviving child, William, duke of Gloucester, Sophia was the next non-catholic heir, and was recognized in the Act of Settlement of 1701.
Electress Sophia of Hanover was the granddaughter of James I and the mother of George I. As neither William III and Mary II nor Queen Anne had produced surviving children, the Act of Settlement of 1701 proclaimed Sophia heiress presumptive to the British Crown.
