Sri Uthram Thirunal Marthanda Varma II (26 September 1814 – 18 August 1860) was the Maharajah of Travancore state in southern India, succeeding his elder brother Maharajah Swathi Thirunal in 1846 till his demise in 1860. Known for his progressive rule, he abolished slavery in the kingdom.
Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma was the founding monarch of the southern Indian Kingdom of Travancore (previously Venadu) from 1729 until his death in 1758. [1] . He was succeeded by Rama Varma ("Dharma Raja") (1758–98). [2] .

Taking advantage of the shortage of Dutch troops, Marthanda Verma launched an offensive to take back Colachel. Using his patrol boats to block any supplies from the sea, Marthanda Verma laid siege to the Colachel, encircling the Dutch with a 1,000 strong army.
