Padmasambhava ("Born from a Lotus"), [note 2] also known as Guru Rinpoche (Precious Guru) and the Lotus from Oḍḍiyāna, was a tantric Buddhist Vajra master from medieval India who taught Vajrayana in Tibet (circa 8th – 9th centuries).
Padmasambhava (flourished 8th century) was a legendary Indian Buddhist mystic who introduced Tantric Buddhism to Tibet and who is credited with establishing the first Buddhist monastery there. According to tradition, he was a native of Udyāna (now Swat, Pak.), an area famed for its magicians.
