The Minister of Justice (法務大臣, Houmu Daijin) is a member of the Cabinet of Japan and is the leader and chief executive of the Ministry of Justice. The minister is nominated by the Prime Minister of Japan and is appointed by the Emperor of Japan. The current minister is Ryuji Koizumi, who took office on 13 September 2023.
The Ministry of Justice was established in 1871 as the Ministry of Justice (司法省, Shihōshō). It acquired its present name under the post-war Constitution of Japan in 1952. Its responsibilities include administration of Japan's judicial system and the penal system.
