Conception Abbey is a Benedictine monastery located in northwest Missouri where all we do is dedicated to the glory of God as St. Benedict instructs in his Rule. For 150 years now, we have existed to praise God in our daily cycle of prayer and work, welcome guests, educate future priests, and share the Gospel.
Conception Abbey, site of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, is a monastery of the Swiss-American Congregation of the Benedictine Confederation. The monastery, founded by the Swiss Engelberg Abbey in 1873 in northwest Missouri's Nodaway County , was raised to a conventual priory in 1876 and elevated to an abbey in 1881.
The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is the heartbeat of Conception Abbey. Here, the monks gather six times a day to praise God through the Divine Office and the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.
There are many reasons to visit Conception Abbey! Whether it’s to join the monks in their daily cycle of prayer, to visit the Gift Shop, or make an overnight stay in the Abbey Guest Center, the monks of Conception Abbey welcome all.
