Edward James Herbert, was the eldest son of Edward Herbert [formerly Clive], 2nd Earl of Powis, and Lucy, third daughter of James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose. Styled Viscount Clive 1839 1848, he was educated at Eton and St John's College, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. 1840, and LL.D. 1842.
