Edward "Kid" Ory (December 25, 1886 – January 23, 1973) was an American jazz composer, trombonist and bandleader. One of the early users of the glissando technique, he helped establish it as a central element of New Orleans jazz .
Kid Ory (born Dec. 25, 1886, Laplace, La., U.S.—died Jan. 23, 1973, Honolulu, Hawaii) was an American trombonist and composer who was perhaps the first musician to codify, purely by precept, the role of the trombone in classic three-part contrapuntal jazz improvisation.
The trombonist’s ensemble and solo work on “Black Bottom Stomp,” “Smoke House Blues,” “Grandpa’s Spells,” “Doctor Jazz,” “The Chant,” and others assure Ory’s place in the top rank of jazz trombonists. Jelly Roll Morton and his Red Hot Peppers, December 1926.
