Rain is a 2001 New Zealand film directed by Christine Jeffs. A debut film by Jeffs, it was released in New Zealand in 2001 and internationally in 2002. It concerns the coming of age of 13-year-old Janey, and is based on the novel Rain, written by Kirsty Gunn. Rain was produced by Philippa Campbell.
It is the summer of 1972 and the Phelon family are settling into their isolated cottage for another perfect seaside holiday. 13-year-old Janey, not yet an adult, but no longer a child, is becoming increasingly aware of the cracks in her parents’ marriage.
Rain, a young black musical prodigy, finds trouble and heartbreak when she witnesses her sister's murder by gangbangers. In order to protect her daughter, Rain's mother secretly contacts Rain's biological mother, and Rain learns the truth of her parentage: She is the daughter of a white socialite.
