"The Confrontation" takes part in 1823, in the infirmary after Fantine dies. Javert enters the hospital to imprison Jean Valjean again. During the song, they fight, Javert with a sword and Valjean with a broken piece of wood. Near the end, Javert is knocked out and Valjean escapes.

The lyrics were written by Herbert Kretzmer.

    Javert:

    Valjean, at last,

    We see each other plain!

    'M'sieur le Maire',

    You'll wear a different chain!Valjean:

Before you say another word, Javert

•In 2012 movie, the ending is shortened. Javert sings, "You know nothing [...] the gutter too!" without Valjean's counterpoint lines, "I am warning you [...] what must be done!". Javert disarms Valjean, who flees out the window, transitioning straight into the next piece, rather than include the ending portion. ("And this I swear [...] I will be there.")

•The song used tunes from Prologue: Work Song, Javert's first part uses the "Look Down" part while the rest of the song uses Javert and Valjean's meeting.

  4. A musical song from the first act of the musical Les Miserables, where Valjean and Javert face each other for the first time. The song is a duet of contrasting views on justice, law, and mercy, with a climactic fight and escape.

  5. a fight or argument: Some couples seem to like confrontation, but Josh and I hardly ever argue. There were violent confrontations between police and demonstrators. Synonym. showdown. Fewer examples. There are signs that the confrontation is beginning to de-escalate. The fear is that these minor clashes may develop into all-out confrontation.
