In Victorian-era London, Gabriel Syme is recruited at Scotland Yard to a secret anti- anarchist police corps. Lucian Gregory, an anarchistic poet, lives in the suburb of Saffron Park. Syme meets him at a party and they debate the meaning of poetry. Gregory argues that revolt is the basis of poetry.

The novel is considered a metaphysical thriller, and our film could be considered the same, though it also can be thought of in more classical cinematic terms a psychological and supernatural thriller.
A film adaptation of G. K. Chesterton's metaphysical thriller, starring a priest who infiltrates a group of anarchists. The reviewer praises the first act's exploration of doubt and faith, but criticizes the second and third acts' lack of clarity and coherence.
