The development of the film continued between 2014 and 2016 with Mass Animation handling production and Open Road Films acquiring the United States distribution rights before dropped out in 2017, following the closure of Open Road Films.

Samurai Kids is a family movie directed by Obayashi and starring Tsutomu Yamazaki, Ittoku Kishibe and Tomoyo Harada. It looks like a Japanese version of The Indian in a Cupboard (Lynne Reid Banks, 1980) but it’s in fact adapted from an original Japanese novel written by Masumi Suetani.
