Ministry of Cooperation was created by transferring the existing entries related to cooperation and cooperative in the business of the erstwhile Ministry of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare vide Cabinet Secretariat’s Gazette Notification dated 6th July, 2021.
The Ministry is responsible for provide a separate administrative, legal and policy framework for strengthening the cooperative movement in country. Its aims to deepen co-operatives as a true people-based movement reaching up to the grassroots and develop a cooperative based economic model where each member works with a spirit to responsibility.

The Ministry of Cooperation is a Union ministry under the Government of India which was formed in 2021. The ministry provides a separate administrative, legal and policy framework for strengthening the cooperative movement in the country.
The Ministry of Cooperation was constituted on 6th July, 2021 with a mandate, inter alia to strengthen cooperative movement in the country & deepening its reach up to grassroots; and creation of appropriate policy, legal & institutional framework to help cooperatives realize their potential.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and guidance of Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah, the Ministry of Cooperation constituted three new Multi-State Cooperative Societies for Exports, Certified Seeds and Organic Products on 11 th January, 2023.
