K9, occasionally written K-9, is the name of several fictional robotic canines (dogs, the name being a pun on the pronunciation of "canine") in the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who, first appearing in 1977.
K9 — occasionally written as K-9 or K•9 — was the designation given to a series of intelligent, dog -like robots who served as companions of Professor Marius, the Fourth Doctor, Leela, Romana, the Mistress, Sarah Jane Smith, Tom Baker, Luke Smith, Starkey, Ace, the Tenth Doctor, and the Thirteenth Doctor .
Built in the year 5000 as the robot companion of Professor Marius, K-9 was a mobile computer with built-in defensive weapons. After helping defeat The Swarm, the Professor offered K-9 to the Doctor and Leela.
