History of Sialkot (Punjabi: سیالکوٹ دی تریخ; Urdu: تاريخ سیالکوٹ), the capital of Sialkot District, is a city situated in the north-east of the Punjab province in Pakistan at the feet of the snow-covered peaks of Kashmir near the Chenab river.
Sialkot continued to be a major political center until it was eclipsed by Lahore around the turn of the first millennium CE. Sialkot was the capital of Jasrat who reigned over most of Punjab and Jammu in the early 15th century.
Sialkot's historical roots can be traced back to ancient times, with archaeological evidence suggesting its existence as far back as 327 BCE during the invasion of Alexander the Great. Over the centuries, it has been a melting pot of various civilizations, including the Persian, Greek, and Mughal empires.
Sialkot is one of the most important industrial cities of Pakistan. It has very ancient history. Sialkot was founded by Raja Sul and later it was reconstructed by Raja Salivahian, he also built a fort in the city, thus the city was given the name ‘Sialkot” which means the “Fort of Sia”.
It is said to have been founded by Raja Sāla, uncle of the Pāṇḍavas of the epic Mahābhārata, and refounded by Raja Sālivāhan in the time of Vikramāditya; it may be the site of ancient Śākala (Sagul), capital of the Indo-Greek Menander (Milinda) and Mihirakula the Hun (died 540 ce ).
Sialkot has produces very famous poets throughout its history. It is the home of the greatest poet which world has ever seen, Allama Iqbal. Furthermore more great poets and writers like Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Muhammad Zafarullah Khan, and Asghar Sodhar belong to Sialkot.
