Adtranz was a multi-national rail transportation equipment manufacturer with facilities concentrated in Europe and the US. The company, legally known as ABB Daimler-Benz Transportation, was created in 1996 as a joint venture between ABB and Daimler-Benz to combine their rail equipment manufacturing operations.
As our aviation business was growing, Bombardier Transportation became the worldwide leader in the rail equipment industry by acquiring Adtranz in 2001. In 2002, Bombardier relocated its transportation headquarters from Montréal to Berlin.
Adtranz was a sprawling multi-national company twice the size of Bombardier at the time, which had only become profitable in the months before the merger. The combination would make Bombardier the largest rail-equipment manufacturer.
