Sahitya Akademi is India’s National Academy of Letters and premier literary institution. Established in 1954 by the Government of India to promote literature in the languages of India including English, Sahitya Akademi promotes literary dialogues and set literary standards for all the 24 languages recognized by the Akademi.
The Government of India decided to establish a National Academy of letters to be called Sahitya Akademi by its resolution No F-6-4/51G2 (A) dated December 1952. The Sahitya Akademi was formally inaugurated by the Government of India on 12 March 1954.
