Medina is a desert oasis surrounded by the Hejaz Mountains and volcanic hills. The soil surrounding Medina consists of mostly basalt, while the hills, especially noticeable to the south of the city, are volcanic ash which dates to the first geological period of the Paleozoic Era.

Medina (/ m ə ˈ d iː n ə /; Arabic: المدينة المنورة, al-Madīnah al-Munawwarah, "the radiant city"; or المدينة, al-Madīnah (Hejazi pronunciation: [almaˈdiːna]), "the city"), also transliterated as Madīnah, is a city in the Hejaz, and the capital of the Al Madinah Region of Saudi Arabia.
Medina, Arabic Al-Madīnah ancient Yathrib, City (pop., 2004: 918,889), western Saudi Arabia, north of Mecca. It developed from an oasis settled by Jews c. 135 ce. In 622 the Prophet Muhammad fled from Mecca to Medina (see Hijrah). It served as capital of the Islamic state until 661.
I was puzzled when during Hajj in 2006, the organizers took all Muslim pilgrims ( Hujaj) in our group for an additional two day trip to the city of Madinah. I know Mecca and Madinah are the two most important cities in Islam with Jerusalem as the third. However, I did not know why.
