Arthur Murray Teichman was born on April 4, 1895, in New York City, to Jewish immigrant parents who had come from Austria a year earlier. The family lived on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, home to many poor émigrés who had also fled anti-Semitism in Europe, and Murray's father, Abraham, found work selling bread from a street vendor's cart.
