Since a large part of the novel is about the adulterous relationship between Mahendra and the widow Binodini, the references to Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's Bishabriksha / Vishabriksha could be more than just coincidence. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find out what that novel is about.
