Under both of its editors with their widely differing tastes, the Fontana Book of Great Ghost Stories series presents a shifting mixture of the classic and the contemporary, heavy reading and light weight fluff, the traditional, the oddball and the surprising.
A look back on the Fontana Great Ghost Stories paperback series, initally edited by Robert Aickman, and later R. Chetwynd-Hayes.
I believe this is the finest multi-volume set of ghost stories ever issued. Even the introductions are interesting. The only publications that can compete with Fontana are the 36 (and counting) thrice-yearly issues of "All Hallows: The Journal of the Ghost Story Society."
