His father Mikhail (or Mikhaylo), a Soviet table tennis champion in 1982, moved his family to Germany shortly after Dimitrij was born.

The German international is a former World Ranking leader. Ovtcharov has compered in four Olympic Games and twice have reached the final in the teams event.
