The skater finished second in her national championships and was not included in the Japanese Olympic team. In spite of this, Arakawa was successful in other championships, such as the Four Continents and NHK Trophy. In 2004 in Dortmund, she became women’s world figure skating champion.
Shizuka Arakawa was born in Tokyo, Japan and grew up in Sendai, Miyagi. Shizuka began skating when she was five. She went to the ice rink and saw a girl with the cute costume.

Feb 23, 2006 · Teenage talent Arakawa wins Japan's only medal. It was the allure of the costumes that drew a five-year-old Shizuka Arakawa to figure skating, but by the age of eight she could perform a triple salchow, and when she was 16 she represented Japan at the Winter Games in Nagano.
As a teenager, she made a fairly inconspicuous Olympic debut at Nagano, and disappeared into anonymity afterwards. She reappeared in 2003, winning gold medals at the Asian Winter Games and Winter Universiade, and placing 8th in the World Championships.
