Alfred Jentoft Maurstad was born at Bryggja in Davik (now Vågsøy) in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. He was the son of Brynnel Maurstad (1859–1943) and Lovise Marie Brølos (1867–1943). Maurstad attended a military academy in Bergen (Bergenske Brigades Underoffiserskole). During his teenage years he performed in several concerts in the district of Nordfjord, playing on his Hardanger fiddle.

Alfred Jentoft Maurstad (født 26. juli 1896 på gården Maurstad i Stad (dengang Davik), død 5. september 1967) var en norsk skuespiller, spelemann, teatersjef og regissør som i ettertid er mest kjent fra rollen som Gjest i filmen Gjest Baardsen.. Fra ungdommen spilte Alfred Maurstad til dans i Nordfjord, og gjorde flere store konsertinnspillinger av norske slåtter med hardingfele.Han spilte tradisjonsmusikk fra Nordfjord, Telemark og Voss.
The actor Alfred Maurstad (1896-1967) was born and grew up at Bryggja in the western part of Nordfjord. The home of his childhood was the smallholding called Tuftene, located in the sloping terrain down to the bay of Maurstadvika. The house is privately owned and is not open to the public. Arthur Klæboe paid a visit to Tuftene in 1966 to record a radio interview with Maurstad.

Alfred Maurstad ble født i karrige, men trygge kår på et småbruk i Nordfjord.Han var inspirert av det levende folkemusikkmiljøet, og som ung ble han en mester i felespill.I 1916 dro han til underoffisersskolen i Bergen.På fritiden spilte han til dans i bygdelagene og var statist som slave fra Nubia i Quo Vadis på Den Nationale Scene.Etter eksamen i 1917 arbeidet han som butikksvenn og kontorist før han ble bokholder hos baker Martens, der sjefen likte felespill.
Skodespelaren Alfred Maurstad (1896-1967) vart fødd og voks opp på Bryggja i Ytre Nordfjord. Barndomsheimen hans på småbruket Tuftene ligg i skråninga ned mot Maurstadvika. Det er i privat eige og ikkje ope for ålmenta. Arthur Klæboe var på vitjing på Tuftene i 1966 for å laga eit radiointervju med Maurstad.
