Moving to New York City, Warner became a true pioneer of the American cinema, making his first films in 1912. By 1917 he was a regular in the New Jersey studios (Solax Studio in Fort Lee) of Maurice Tourneur. When the film industry moved to southern California, Richmond and his wife also moved to rural Toluca Lake with their only son.

According to his death certificate, Werner Paul Raetzmann was born in Racine, Wisconsin (not Virginia as often reported), January 11, 1886. Racine is suspect, however, as, at the time, the family was living in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, half-a-state away. 1880, 1900 and 1910 census records all show the family, including Werner, living in Reedsburg.
