David Wark Griffith (January 22, 1875 – July 23, 1948) was an American film director. Considered one of the most influential figures in the history of the motion picture, [2] he pioneered many aspects of film editing [3] and expanded the art of the narrative film. [4]
On February 8, 1915, Harry Aitken and D. W. Griffith founded the Epoch Producing Corporation to handle the distribution of The Birth of a Nation. The board of directors of the new company met in the middle of March to decide how to distribute the film, which was already playing to capacity audiences at the Liberty Theater in New York.
