In the earliest days of KFWB, Warner, who was a big radio fan, played the part of announcer and singer “Leon Zuardo,” the name Warner had used in vaudeville. According to Hal Wallis, Zuardo would croon in the style of his idol, Al Jolson, and tell jokes to the Warner employees sitting in the studio bleachers.
As a child, Warner wanted to be an entertainer, singing and telling jokes. When he was a teenager, he performed in vaudeville and at a local opera house under the name Leon Zuardo. Over his lifetime, he developed a reputation for telling bad jokes.
He adopted the stage name Leon Zuardo for publicity purposes. In order to raise the ticket price, the brothers assured the small-town audience that they had brought the famous Italian singer especially for them.
