James Clavell’s Shōgun (1975) is a novel based on events and figures of 1600 Japan when the Azuchi–Momoyama period neared its end as the Edo period was about to begin. The third book published, but the first chronologically placed, in Clavell's six-volume Asian Saga, by 1980 it had sold six million copies worldwide.
