Knut Fredrik Idestam (28 October 1838, Tyrväntö, Grand Duchy of Finland – 8 April 1916, Helsinki, Grand Duchy of Finland) was a Finnish mining engineer and businessman, best known as a founder of Nokia.
Nokia's history dates from 1865, when mining engineer Fredrik Idestam established a pulp mill on the shores of the Tammerkoski rapids near the town of Tampere, Finland (then in the Russian Empire). A second pulp mill was opened in 1868 near the neighboring town of Nokia, where there were better hydropower resources.
Fredrik Idestam (1838-1916) was a Finnish industrialist who imported wood-pulping technology from Germany and built Finland's first paper mills. He also founded Nokia Ltd, a leading company in the forest products industry, and was a key figure in the establishment of paper producers' associations.
