Peters was a Peabody- and Emmy Award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker most famous for his work reporting on race relations in America. Initially intending to study zoology, he enrolled at Northwestern University. His education was interrupted by World War II, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces and became a B-17 pilot.
