Sutton wrote in his 1928 book Diamond: A Descriptive Treatise: “Ordinary black diamond is not greatly unlike black sealing wax.Opinions differ as to its virtues as a gemstone.”
Black diamonds are among the most popular color of colored diamonds. In fact, in recent years as the popularity for nonconventional engagement rings has grown the demand for these beautiful gems has gone through the roof and for a good reason which I'll shortly explain.
What Is a Black Diamond? Black diamonds are real diamonds, though their distinctive black color sets them apart from other precious stones. Two of the most popular black diamonds are Carbonado and Salt and Pepper Diamond. They are composed of carbon atoms like all real diamonds, but what makes them unique is the presence of graphite inclusions that give off a dark hue.

A curious stone often referred to as "black diamond," carbonado is more accurately described as a polycrystalline or aggregate diamond material of amorphous carbon, graphite, and diamond. This polycrystalline variety of diamond has greater durability than crystalline diamond and is used primarily in industry. However, in February 2022, Sotheby's sold a faceted, 555.55-ct carbonado diamond named "Enigma.". Carbonado resembles charcoal.
