Early career. Sudermann was born at Matzicken, a village to the east of Heydekrug in the Province of Prussia (now Macikai, in southwestern Lithuania ), close to the Russian frontier. The Sudermanns were a Mennonite family from the Vistula delta Mennonite communities near the former Elbing, East Prussia, (now Elbląg, Poland).
Hermann Sudermann (born Sept. 30, 1857, Matziken, East Prussia [now in Lithuania]—died Nov. 21, 1928, Berlin, Ger.) was one of the leading writers of the German naturalist movement. Though first apprenticed to a chemist, Sudermann was eventually able to attend the University of Königsberg.

Hermann Sudermann was born in Matziken, East Prussia, on Sept. 30, 1857. He described his youthful poverty in Das Bilderbuch meiner Jugend (1922).
Educated at Koningsberg University and the University of Berlin, Sudermann had to give up his studies because of financial difficulties. He worked for a time as a tutor before becoming a journalist in Bern, Switzerland. He returned to Germany in 1881 and became the editor of the Deutsches Reichsblatt.
