Pre-Apocalypse
Hyeon-ju was a student of Hyosan High School and a bully. While she is not shown to have directly participated in the bullying, she was present for at least one incident of violence towards Lee Jin-su, where she complained when the violence got her splashed with rainwater.

The day before the outbreak, Hyeon-ju was assigned to clean the science lab, after which she fell asleep. When she wakes up, the other students have left. She goes to leave as well, but stops to investigate a strange noise from the science office. The noise is revealed to be coming from an infected mouseinside a glass box with air holes. After Byeong-chan leaves to teach his morning classes, Hyeon-ju manages to break free of the science office. She runs to Class 2-5 and collapses in Sun-hwa's arms. Lee Su-hyeok lifts Hyeon-ju onto his back and he, Sun-hwa, Nam On-jo and Yoon I-sak rush Hyeon-ju to the nurse's office, where Hyeon-ju bites the nurse on the finger.
