Saint Francis, God's Jester is one of Rossellini's most beguiling and humane films. With its minimalist composition and sparse narrative, it makes an unaffected study in faith and mankind's potential for goodness that is striking in its simplicity and yet so profoundly meaningful, more inspiring than any Church sermon.
Production. Rossellini had been working on a film about St. Francis for years and he later called this film his favorite of his own works. Rossellini and Federico Fellini wrote a treatment of the film that was 28 pages long and contained only 71 lines of dialogue.
Cowritten by Rossellini protégé Federico Fellini and a pair of monks named Father Antonio Lisandrini, and Father Félix Morión, The Flowers of St. Francis is vastly different from most of Rossellini’s films, but only on the surface.
