- Helvellyn Walk from Patterdale, via Striding Edge, Swirral Edge and Red Tarn. This Helvellyn walk is the shortest Striding Edge route and a simple route to follow from the small village of Patterdale (it can be modified to start from Glenridding also).

It takes about 3 hours to walk up Helvellyn via Striding Edge from Glenridding. The walk involves 2,750 feet (840 metres) of ascent. The route is about 4 miles long. The best descent from the summit is via Swirral Edge. The entire circular hike is 8 miles and takes about 5 hours and 45 minutes to complete. The route is marked on the map below.

There are no facilities on the walk itself so take plenty of water and lunch/snacks. Toilets (50p payable by card) are available at Glenridding Car Park. Glenridding Village has a couple of stores, a few cafes, and a pub – The Travellers Rest.
Aug 28, 2021 · This Helvellyn via Striding Edge and Swirral Edge hiking trail is a 13km (8 miles) long circular route. Depending on your speed, how long it takes to walk along Striding Edge and Swirral Edge, and how long you’re spending on top of Helvellyn, this route could take between 5 to 7 hours to complete.
The top of Helvellyn is a broad plateau, trending roughly from north-west to south-east for about a kilometre between Lower Man and the start of Striding Edge. Throughout this distance it remains more than 900 m (3,000 ft) high.
At 950m, Helvellyn is the third-highest peak in the Lake District. And climbing it is on many walkers’ bucket-lists. Especially the route via Striding Edge, one of England’s most iconic Grade 1 scrambles. This is an adrenalin-filled day of big fells, big views and what feels like a knife-edge clamber up the ridge.
