    • Glassworks. This 1982 disc of shorter works by Glass is the classic way in. These pieces were specifically written to be recorded, as opposed to performed live, and they were intended to introduce Glass's music to a wider audience.
    • Music in Twelve Parts. This piece, completed in 1974, is Glass's definitive early work. It contains all of the hallmarks of Glass's most explicitly "minimalist" period: very little harmonic variety, simple melodies and countermelodies bouncing playfully off of each other, and the unmistakable sound of the Farfisa organ.
    • Koyaanisqatsi. Glass's forays into film scoring are probably another reason why his name has become so familiar. Not all of his film music is instantly memorable, and certainly his music is a far cry from his more specialized contemporaries like John Williams or Howard Shore.
    • String Quartet No. 5. Chamber music represents a fairly small portion of Glass's output, but like many composers before him, he's used the string quartet as a vehicle to refine his compositional methods down to their essentials.

    • North Star (1977) In the 1970s, Glass scored a number of documentary films, of which this portrait of sculptor Mark di Suvero had the longest afterlife, perhaps because it offers a more immediately graspable way of exploring the musical landscapes of his longer and more challenging mid-1970s works.
    • Koyaanisqatsi (1983) Playing almost uninterrupted for the film’s entire length, Glass’s score for Godfrey Reggio’s unclassifiable film polemic imposed riveting order on what could easily have been visual chaos.
    • Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) Endless recycling (The Truman Show, countless TV documentaries) has lessened the impact of Glass’s first dramatic film score of its original power, but three decades ago it was electrifying stuff, taking the story of Japanese author-turned-martyr Yukio Mishima and practically turning it into opera, without a single note being sung.
    • Powaqqatsi (1988) Glass’s second collaboration with Godfrey Reggio offers a very different musical experience, paralleling the film’s journey through the Third World with variations on Indian, African, Chinese and Middle Eastern music.
