Mar 27, 2002 · Rockstar North, formerly known as DMA Design, was founded in 1988 by David Jones, Russell Kay, and Mike Dailly in Dundee, Scotland. The name DMA was taken from the Amiga programming manuals, where it stood for "Direct Memory Access". DMA Design was most known for developing Lemmings and early Grand Theft Auto games. In December 1996, the company was acquired by Gremlin Interactive.
Rockstar North began life as a small studio in Dundee called DMA Design in 1987. DMA was acquired by Rockstar Games in September 1999, just before the release of Grand Theft Auto 2 .

Nov 3, 2023 · Mike founded DMA Design (Rockstar North) in 1989 along side 3 of his friends, Steve Hammond, Russell Kay and David Jones, where they went and released a puzzle Strategy game called Lemmings. Mike was known for creating the game engine that the first Grand Theft Auto title ran on. He then helped the company with Grand Theft Auto 2 before leaving DMA Designs completely in 1999 to focus on new projects.

Known previously for it's top-down Grand Theft Auto games, 2001's Grand Theft Auto III brought the series into 3D. It became the PlayStation 2's biggest system seller in both the U.S. and Europe; Sony, realising that the game was a sure-fire success, paid Rockstar to keep it a PS2 exclusive for some time.
