Incidentally, the b-side to “Rescue Me” was a song called “Soul of the Man,” and this is exactly what we hear.

Fontella Marie Bass (/ b æ s /; July 3, 1940 – December 26, 2012) was an American R&B and soul singer-songwriter best known for her number-one R&B hit "Rescue Me" in 1965. She has been nominated for a Grammy Award twice.
Though he was certainly not afraid to appropriate the growls, whinnies, slurs, and slides of the early jazzers, it was always in the service of a thoroughly modern sensibility. And Bowie had chops; his style was quirky, to be sure, but grounded in fundamental jazz concepts of melody, harmony, and rhythm.
