Hydrogen Jukebox is a 1990 chamber opera featuring the music of Philip Glass and the work of beat poet Allen Ginsberg. Its name is taken from a phrase coined by Ginsberg, from his 1955 poem Howl.
PREMIERE: May 26, 1990 at the Spoleto Music Festival USA, Charleston, SC. Concert version: April 29, 1990 at the American Music Theater Festival Philadelphia, PA. NOTES: Drawing upon Ginsberg’s poetry, this music/theater piece is a portrait of America that cover’s the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, seen by the collaborators Glass, Ginsberg and Sirlin.
There are the themes of art, travel, East-meets-West and ecology, which is on everyone’s mind. And war, of course, Peace, Pacifism. The title Hydrogen Jukebox comes from a verse in the poem Howl: “…listening to the crack of doom on the hydrogen jukebox…”.
