Chris Austin Hadfield OC OOnt MSC CD (born August 29, 1959) is a Canadian retired astronaut, engineer, fighter pilot, musician, and writer. The first Canadian to perform extravehicular activity in outer space, he has flown two Space Shuttle missions and also served as commander of the International Space Station (ISS).
Officer of the Order of Canada (2014). Experience: Raised on a corn farm in southern Ontario, Chris Hadfield became interested in flying from a young age. As an Air Cadet, he won a glider pilot scholarship at age 15 and a powered pilot scholarship at age 16. He also taught skiing and ski racing part- and full-time for 10 years.

Hadfield was the first Canadian mission specialist, the first Canadian to operate the Canadarm in orbit and the only Canadian to board Mir. After his flight, he became the spacecraft communicator (or CAPCOM) for mission STS-77, on which Marc Garneau flew as a mission specialist in May 1996.
