Highgate is a suburban area of London at the northeastern corner of Hampstead Heath, 4 + 1 ⁄ 2 miles (7 kilometres) north-northwest of Charing Cross. Highgate is one of the most expensive London suburbs in which to live.

Highgate originated as the southeastern tollgate into the mediæval Bishop of London’s 1,000-acre Deer Park, from which its name probably derives. The Church owned the land from the 7th to the 19th century, when it was sold for development.
