Pinjar tells the story of Puro, a young woman of Hindu background, living a lovely life circling the time of the partition of 1947 with her family. Puro is betrothed to a wealthy, sweet young man, Ramchand, from a promising family.

She returns to Rashid, reluctantly surrendering to fate and losing her religion, name, and identity in the process.
On the eve of the India/Pakistan partition, a man (Manoj Bajpai) abducts a woman (Urmila Matondkar) awaiting an arranged marriage to a scholar (Sanjay Suri).
