I fixed this issue by uninstalling the Intel (R) Smart Sound Technology (Intel (R) SST) Audio Controller driver and the Intel (R) Smart Sound Technology (Intel (R) SST) OED driver at the same time [ use the delete option when uninstalling ], I restarted, and after a second the red x disappeared and my sound was back!!
Sep 23, 2022 · Windows 11 is trying to update "Intel Corporation - Extension - 22.1120.0.1" and in the update history it seems that the same driver has been installed every day. Apparently this problem/driver also causes my laptop opening to black screen sometimes (or the system just get stuck)...
Jan 25, 2024 · Go to the support page for your laptop on the Lenovo website, then from there, download and manually re-install the Intel graphics drivers, Audio drivers and chipset drivers they provide, do not just update your drivers and while there, check for any BIOS update that may be available and not yet installed. The update in question is motherboard chipset driver (an extension for the Intel Management Engine) for the hardware in your computer. It is best to allow it to update.

I am sorry, the Intel G41 Express Chipset is no longer supported and indeed you will be unable to install a driver for that into Windows 10, that device was originally supported on Windows XP and is way too old to be used on Windows 10.
