Just came here for an answer, since the em dash looked like a space in the PDF previewer I was using. Turns out the font just had a very thin line for a dash. I embiggened the previewer, and voila!--there were the em dashes! In case someone else has the same issue. –

The trouble is the em-dash, which I can’t set in the listings environment. The MWE below shows what I’ve tried so far. Typing “---” prints just three hyphens, \emdash{} doesn’t print anything at all, escaping the listings environment does print the em-dash, but it creates trouble with the string formatting: The space characters are not displayed as they should (like in example 1).
Jul 1, 2012 · metal type fonts often had two sets of digits, one intended for use in text (with widths appropriate to the digits' shapes) and one for use in tables (with uniform widths). this avoided (in text) the spacing issues associated particularly with the digit 1. there was sometimes a second double set of digits, "old style", which blend more pleasingly with text, and are said by some (using the mono-width version) to make the values in tables more easily grasped.

Dash --or ---is used generally in a place of comma , or as an interval, like 2009--2011. In "classical" English typography, you don't put spaces around dashes---like just here; it is because English typography tends to make all the inter-word spaces equal, no matter whether there's a dash or comma between the words. Em dash is occasionally used to set off an introductory noun, or a series of nouns, from a pronoun that introduces the main clause. Consensus—that was the will-o’-the wisp he doggedly pursued. Broken promises, petty rivalries, and false rumors—such were the obstacles he encountered.
Due to the typesetting rules, the em-dash MUST stay at the end of the line if the line is about to break at this point, which is why moving it to the beginning of the next line cannot be considered. I tried applying microtype , but it seems not being able to condense the em-dash ONLY in case it is positioned at the end of the line AND is causing an overfull.
