For clarity it would be better to say "Tuesday night", for example. But here we don't know how long ago this scene took place. It is correct to write "the night before", though native speakers will often write "last night" instead.

  9. Dec 5, 2016 · With "the previous night" you need to be careful, because "previous" is relative to some specific time that is either express or implied. If you said that X happened last night, and that Y happened the previous night, then it would be understood that X happened the night before today, and that Y happened the night before X happened, i.e. two nights ago.
